Father La Caille (1713-62) was a great 18th century astronomer. He carried out a long mission in the southern hemisphere (1750-54), and built an astronomical observatory in Cape Town (South Africa), where he carried out an impressive number of astronomical observations.
The first edition of this work appeared in 1750.
